Shark fin soup is a Chinese soup made using the fins of sharks. It is served in many asian restaurants, and thought to be a delicacy.
Shark Fin soup has no nutritional value and is known to be practically tasteless because all the flavor comes from the broth not the fins. The fins are just added for texture and as a symbol to mark a tradition in Chinese history.
Shark Fin soup was first a traditional dish for the wealthy and for the emperors on special occasions. However, because China's economy has been growing vastly more and more people have been able to afford this, and so the demand for shark fins is increasing.
Why is it bad?
Sadly, this is creating a serious decrease in the shark populations globally, and affects the entire ecosystem of the ocean. Not only are they killing sharks to use their fins for the soup, but they are doing so in a completely unsustainable way. They are vastly overfishing the shark population and are leading them to extinction. If this continues than in our lifetime we could watch as some species of shark go extinct. Besides the fact that they are overfishing the shark population, they are also throwing off the rest of the ecosystem. To read more, please click here.
